My Favorite Super Spice

Have you ever thought of herbs and spices as real food? Well they are (if you buy organic and sustainable!) I've been a long-time proponent of natural ways to fight disease, inflammation and chronic pain. I don't use over-the-counter drugs like Advil or Tylenol (seriously, the last time I used them I had an allergic reaction), but instead use natural ways to help heal my body. One of these is Turmeric.

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and is a super herb/spice! It boosts your immune system, is stronger than Vitamin C, 5-8 times more powerful than Vitamin E and is packed with antioxidants. This herb gives you glowing skin, healthy bones joints, improves digestion. What's not to like?!

When I injured my ankle last month I began taking curcumin as recommended by chiropractor. Within a few days of taking it, I felt so much better! Curcumin is what gives turmeric its yellow color. This highly concentrated root of the spice has many health benefits. If you are injured, coming back from a surgery or just want to live a healthy life, I highly recommend incorporating this into your daily diet! Your body will be glad you did!  Also, whenever a runner tells me they are injured, I recommend this herb right away.

I keep it with me at all times, in fact, and always comes along with me at ultramarathons. I sprinkle it on black rice and beans for lunch or potatoes+sea salt during a race.

Be sure to buy quality, organic turmeric (see the above two links) to ensure you are getting the best nutrients.
