Your poop says a lot about your health.
One of my clients recently asked about their poop and I thought it would be topic to cover today. Poop rarely gets talked about except if you are a parent or child care giver! Whether it’s changing diapers, helping them with potty training or interacting with the child, talking about poop is no longer a taboo subject for you. But sadly, the poop talk stops there. And it shouldn’t. Your poop has so much to tell you about your health! Poop is not a dirty topic. There is nothing to be ashamed of! If more people paid attention to their poop they could improve their health greatly.
There is a reason why they say your gut is your second brain. Your brain and the good bacteria in your digestive system (gut) affects your mood, immune system and inflammation. So if your poops are irregular or anything but type 4 as pictured below, it’s time to heal your gut and heal thy body. And a friendly reminder that 80 percent of your immune system is in your gut, so if you get sick frequently, keep reading!
Even if you eat organic, non-GMO real foods, there is still a chance that you might not be digesting your food well and you can tell that by what your poops look like.
Think of your poop as the fuel gage on your car dashboard flashing E. What does this that light do? It’s a signal that you need to get gas! And if you don’t, well, you’ll be stranded on the side of the road. Same with your poop. If you continue to ignore the signals it is giving you, your health will continue to fail.
What are the four signs your poop is telling you? Let’s dissect them!
1) Are you grunting and pushing?
A normal poop is easy to poop- it’s not giving birth to a child. If you have to wait for 30 minutes for something to finally come out, that’s a clear sign that something is wrong. A normal poop doesn’t take 10+ minutes nor does it leave you rushing to find the nearest bathroom! (Are you a runner? You may want to listen up!)
2) What do your poops look like?
If your poop resemble a snake (type 4), then you get an A+! But if your poops look anything but type 4, it’s time to clean up your health. No pun intended. What should your poops look like? The University of Bristol helps us out. They published a study in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology and along with that included a poop chart, aka, the Bristol Stool Chart (did you know such a thing existed?!)
3) Are you pooping all the time or a few times a week?
One sign of a healthy body is pooping regularly. This one way you detox your body! Poop is waste and if it’s stuck inside you, well disease, sickness, illness occurs. A healthy body actually goes to the bathroom at the same time, every day. It's a healthy routine. If you are going 3+ a day or a few times a week, your health is in jeopardy.
4) Do you get it all out?
The last sign that your health could be on the wrong track is that you have to go multiple times to get rid of all the waste in your colon. When you go to the bathroom you should feel like you emptied your bowels. If not, something is wrong with your overall health.
Did you nod your head to any of the above points or does your poop like the chart (excluding type 4)? Then you’ll want to pay attention to this next part. You want to heal your gut and in turn you’ll heal your body.
1) Probiotics & prebiotics
Probiotics. Due to the toxic foods most of the country is consuming, our guts are suffering big time. Again, 80% of our immune system is in our gut and if you are chronically getting sick, your gut may be the problem. Anytime you consume processed, acid, toxic-filled products, your overall health will be harmed. The best sources of probiotics are from raw, living fermented foods: raw sauerkraut (refrigerated, not shelf stable), kombucha, spirulina, chorella and blue-green algae. My favorite is GT Super Green Chia Kombucha. Prebiotics are also needed for a healthy gut. Bananas, garlic, chicory root, dandelion greens (all in raw, organic form) are fantastic sources. Prevent chronic sickness & illness by taking care of your gut! No germy gut. Bad bacteria is going to lead to unhealthy poop. (Note: I generally do not recommend dairy yogurt as a probiotic source.) Digestive enzymes and probiotic supplement may also be needed. I recommend Nutrition You Can Trust, MegaFoods and InnerEco.
P.S. if you have to take antibiotics, make sure you take probiotics as antibiotics kill the good germs too (not a good thing).
2) Eat real, organic food
This shouldn’t be a surprise to you if you’ve been reading this website or our social platforms frequently. Eating real, organic food is at the core of disease prevention and living a healthy life. This means eating very little sugar (besides fruit and raw honey), eating very little grains (sprouted grains are fine) and even avoiding fake meats (Tofurky is very processed). Sugar, processed grains & processed food-like products will cause your stools to have problems. Our bodies were not created to eat processed crap. If you want to eat meat then eat the real thing! And that means meat (and dairy) must be organic, grass-fed and if possible, local. No antibiotic/hormone meat. Ever, ever.
3) Healthy fats
One immediate sign of unhealthy poops is that you aren’t eating enough healthy fats. Some of the healthy fats include: organic nuts, organic avocado, organic coconut oil. Try adding 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your daily food plan for 30 days and see how your health and poops change for the better! Simply scoop out a tablespoon of coconut oil and eat it. It’s so good!
4) Nothing processed
If it comes through a window (fast “food”), a piece of paper (Rx prescription), Big Food anything (Oreos, bread, cookies, Gatorade, chips, crackers, deli fake meats, etc), or is grown with pesticides, do not eat/consume! Each of these products affects your health in adverse ways. They are all toxins and will wreak havoc on your overall health and life. When toxins are consumed they collect in your body and cause all sorts of harmful health problems. The goal is to live a toxin free life as much as possible. Again, eat real, organic food, stay away from anything grown with pesticides and know exactly what you put in your body at all times. Your health (and poop) will thank you.
5) No fake fiber!
If you have trouble pooping (constipated or have to strain/push), please do not take fake fiber. Have you ever read the ingredients on a bottle of Metamucil? Some of the ingredients include coloring dyes, sucrose, artificial color. Or what about MiraLAX (given to children)? Ingredients include: Polyethylene Glycol (!!), coloring dyes. Coloring dyes alone are linked to cancer & disease! Fiber does not come from a plastic bottle! Polyethylene Glycol (Never mind the fact that it comes from a plastic bottle (BPA) too!) Fiber comes from real, organic food, chia seeds (add 1 tablespoon to your reusable glass water bottle daily), leafy, green organic veggies (kale, spinach, collards, Swiss chard). Fake fiber is a Big Food product, btw. Please, please, if your children are having trouble going poop, change what they eat. Please don't give them toxins from a plastic bottle or processed crap. These precious children need real, organic FOOD.
