Beauty Care 101

“If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body? Your skin absorbs at least 60% of what you slather on it and is absorbed right into your bloodstream. Store shelves are filled with toxic products which includes beauty products. Even many “healthy” people don’t realize what they are putting on their skin. Up to 95% diseases are preventable (NIH) and they are preventable through lifestyle. What you put in your mouth (cigarettes, gum/mints, alcohol, Rx & OTC drugs, artificial ingredients) and what you put on your skin is directly related to either sickness or health. Many people do not bother to read the ingredients on non-edible products and don’t realize they are putting carcinogens right on their skin. Wellness and healthy living is not exclusive to just one thing.

IN THE
IN THE

Wellness is many holistic things: drinking pure, filtered water (not from a plastic bottle), fitness, eating organic food, supporting local organic farmers, massage, chiropractic care, sustainability, making sure our purchases care for the earth, acupuncture and using non-toxic skin care products.  When buying beauty products i.e. shampoo, conditioner, face cleanser, lotion, cosmetics, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip balms/chapstick, baby products, body butter, perfumes, deodorants, tampons, be sure to read the labels carefully. Ingredients to watch out for and to avoid at all cost:

  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • FD&C Color and Pigments
  • DEA (Diethanolamine)
  • MEA (Monoethanolamine)
  • TEA (Triethanolamine)
  • Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)
  • Propylene Glycol (PG)
  • Butylene Glycol
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Dioxin
  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
  • Triclosan

Personal products also include tampons and pads. Conventional brands (Tampax, Kotex, Playtex, o.b.) that use toxic ingredients in their tampons include dyes, bleached GMO cotton, synthetic materials such as rayon, polypropylene, plastic. Our friends at Veeda tell us more “pads often contain blends of chlorine-bleached pulp that include dioxin, a substance not only linked to TSS, but also to cancer, endometriosis, immune system depression, infertility and hormone disruption. Dioxin is a carcinogen that settles in fat cells and builds up over time.

Many forget that they are literally what they put in their body!

The average woman uses 12 personal care products a day exposing herself to 168 chemicals such as formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption.

Here are some Sarah Stanley Approved brands that are good for your health, the planet, and won’t contribute to disease.

The Dichotomy in the Faith Community

219551219_b55edecd9f_b.jpg

As a believer and part of the faith community I can't but help see what's happening in terms of our health and it's not okay with me. It's no wonder why those who aren't in the faith don't see a difference in our lives and laugh at us! The faith community has bought into the lie of processed foods, GMOs, and disease. We eat the same crap, participate in the sin of gluttony, addicts to fast death ("food"), and let's not forget that these products causes a host of diseases (including cancer!) and health problems (infertility , birth defects, heart disease, stroke, headaches). Additionally, obesity is impacting the church at a massive level, cancer rates have remained unchanged in the last 50 years- and remember that cancer can only thrive in unhealthy bodies. Regardless of your faith denomination (Baptist, Lutheran, Non-denominational...) it's way past time that the faith community see that how they are living, eating, drinking, buying is anything but God glorifying.

What Dr. Russell Blaylock says in the talk below (please, please listen to it) will show you how Christians are defiling the God they say they serve. It's impossible to feed the soul good [spiritual] food and ignore what we are putting in our bodies.

God provided organic food for us to nourish our body with- not GMOs and frankenfoods. GMOs were created for greater profits increased pesticides, and worse of all, patented. Not at all what God intended for this world! (Genesis 1:29)

As Christians it's imperative that we wake up to what is going on around us and change where buy our food and what we are putting in and our bodies. God intended for us to have health not increased disease! We need to live in harmony with the one who created us

In the talk below you'll learn how the processed frankenfoods have ruined our health and our earth and what you can do about it!

To glorify God we must eat the foods that God made (organic, in their natural state), not that man made.

Are you a believer who is currently eating and consuming GMOs, processed crap? Have you bought into the lie that your life is no different from non-believers? How will you change your health today?

My heart is truly burdened for my country and the faith community. I will continue to live, speak, write about this topic for as long as I shall live.

Cancer: The Cure Has Been Found!

Cancer: The Cure Has Been Found!

2769453072_3a81164eef_b.jpg

“I can’t change my genes……” is the excuse people often make for their lifestyle habits. What if science told you that YOU CAN protect and modify your genes' activities!? Because science says you can! The foods you eat, beverages you drink, and the lifestyle you live can either turn cancer cells on or off!! Unlike other diseases, cancer is a silent disease. It can take almost 10 years from the exposure to a cancer-causing event until cancer is actually detected in the body. Cancer is the 2nd most prevalent cause of death for adults in the United States--- 577, 190 Americans die each year from cancer (1). Genes do increase the risk of an individual developing cancer. However, the American Cancer Society reports that only 5% of cancers are “strongly hereditary”, meaning that your genes have a greater impact on development of cancer than environment (1). For most cancer production, however, lifestyle choices have a greater impact on the development of cancer! Lack of physical activity, overweight/obesity, and poor diet contribute to 1/3 of all cancer deaths, while exposure to tobacco contributes to 1/3 of cancer deaths (2). Cut the smoking habit, and you will do yourself and your neighbors a huge favor!!! We must also teach children about PREVENTION of cancer at a young age… exposing children to healthy lifestyle choices NOW because behaviors established in childhood track into adulthood (2), making behavior patterns more difficult to reverse or modify.

Guidelines for the American Cancer Society on Cancer Prevention recommend the following (1-2):

1. Maintain a healthy weight: 14-20% of all cancer deaths are attributed to overweight and obesity. Cancer risk increases with weight status due to hormone production and inflammation that are known to increase with unhealthy weight status.

2. Increase physical activity and REDUCE time spent sitting: Activity helps  maintenance of a healthy weight and reduces risk of all other chronic diseases. Aim for 300 minutes of moderate-intensity (walking, light dancing, yoga, golfing) or 150 minutes of vigorous activity (running, skating, aerobic activity, weight training) each week for optimal protection against cancer!

3. Eat a whole, plant-based diet: the American Cancer Society states: “Consume a healthy diet, with an emphasis on plant foods.” Eat a nutrient-dense diet, meaning foods that are packed with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fiber (e.g. fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains….) rather than foods that are high in added sugars, highly processed, and fried (e.g. pop, candy, chips, store-bought cookies, ice cream, traditional American french fries, refined flours and grains….). Don't rely on supplements to give you antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber—supplements don’t have the same protection as eating the whole plant-based foods (2).

4. EAT LESS MEAT (and animal products). “Current evidence supports approximately a 15-20% increased risk of cancers of the colon and rectum per 100 grams of red meat or 50 grams of processed meat consumed per day, while the evidence for some other cancers (e.g. esophagus, stomach, lung, pancreases, breast, prostate, stomach, endometrium, renal, and ovarian) is considered limited and suggestive”(2, pg 40). Further, the American Cancer Society states… “… there is little evidence to suggest that red meat is beneficial for chronic disease risk, and substantial evidence that it is likely to have harmful effects on all-cause mortality and cancer risk.” (2, pg 41). There are several reasons why animal protein increases cancer risk. Sorry bacon lovers! High-heat cooking, pan-frying, and grilling are known to produce carcinogens and mutagens (that promote cancer production in the body). Nitrates and nitrites in processed meats are also known carcinogens. Fish, though often promoted for it’s omega-3 fatty acids, also contains a high level of environmental pollutants (e.g. mercury, PCBs, dioxins), which are harmful at higher exposures. If you eat seafood, it's recommended to vary the kind of seafood eaten to avoid high exposures to any one pollutant (2). Additionally, the American Cancer Society states that they “do not make specific recommendations regarding calcium and dairy food intake for overall cancer prevention.” (2, pg. 50).

**Research for dairy and other animal-sourced foods tend to be mixed-- meaning some animal-sourced foods don't cause certain cancers, but promote others (e.g. dairy has been linked with prostate cancer, but not colon cancer). The American Cancer Society makes conservative recommendations about limiting animal-sourced foods. If you choose to eat animal products, consume less of them and opt for organic products (not processed, conventional, or factory farmed). However, keep in mind that there is a growing body of evidence that suggests animal-sourced foods play apart in cancer production (see references 6 and the Tedtalks below for more info). We know that plant-based foods can provide all essential nutrients (expect vitamin B12 which we recommend for all people over the age of 50!) and plants offer cancer protection with all their phytonutrients and fiber! Research from quality longitudinal studies show that vegans  and vegetarians have lower rates of cancers than non-vegetarians (7).

5. Limit alcohol. Either drink within LIMITS (2 servings of alcohol for men, 1 serving of alcohol for women, per day**) or don’t drink at all. There is a fine line where alcohol no longer has beneficial, health-promoting properties. Overconsumption of alcohol increases risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, breast, liver, and colon. The American Cancer Society states, “Compared with non-drinkers, there is a 10% to 12% higher increase of female breast cancer associated with each drink per day.”….. “Consumption of 3 drinks per day is associated with a 1.4-fold higher risk of colorectal cancer.” (2, pg. 43). It is believed that the acetaldehyde from alcohol metabolism causes damage to the DNA in normal cells (2, pg. 43).

William Li, ask the question in his Tedtalk, “Can we eat to starve cancer?”

Nutrition, genes, and cancer

Though it is exciting news to hear that your diet and lifestyle can greatly reduce your risk of cancer, The American Cancer Society says that no lifestyle offers COMPLETE protection against cancer. We live in a world full of toxic chemicals..... BUT don’t let that stop you, however, from limiting your exposure to chemicals in your foods, in your drinks, in your cleaning products, and in your beauty products! Living in prevention is beautiful! Physical activity and eating a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods will decrease your risk of other chronic disease (like cardiovascular disease, diabetes…) and help you live to your optimal potential every single day! Make each second of your life count!

When in doubt, just do like the centenarians!

Cheeseburgers and The Church part six

Cheeseburgers and The Church part six

Cheeseburgers and The Church

During this series, we’ve been taking a hard look at the dichotomy of the faith community and the health and the food choices they make.

I'd highly recommend reading the introduction, part two, part three, part four, part five.

Forewarning: if you aren’t ready to read and hear the truth, you may want to bookmark this for later.

And before you dive into this article, please know I write this with the utmost love and compassion for you. I care VERY deeply about you and the health of our country.

Human trafficking, children living in poverty, clean water in Third World countries are all very popular charity work within the faith community. I, myself sponsor two children living in poverty and contribute to the clean water efforts in Africa. I also do not buy Big Food products, drink bottled water, drink coffee or eat meat. I don’t drink soft drinks (never have) or eat fast “food” (it’s not really food). And I make sure my dark (organic) chocolate is fair trade and not made with slave labor. Why? Because I strongly believe that my faith should permeate all areas of my life, not just “Stuff Christians Like” to quote a popular book and website.

You see, it’s really hard to say you’re against human trafficking and then buy products that keep people entrapped in slavery.

It’s a dichotomy to say you believe stealing and lying are sins, but then stuff yourself on take-out, BBQ and Krispy Kremes.

It’s a dichotomy to say you are for spiritual health, but completely ignore how you are treating the very body God designed.

It’s really easy to say addictions (pornography, alcoholism, drugs, smoking, etc.) are wrong, but then be addicted to copious amounts of soda, sugar, unhealthy “food”.

The faith community as a whole (no denomination discrimination here) rarely talks about their health. However, it is becoming increasingly harder to shove the elephant in the closet.

Spiritual health, physical health, mental health - they are all connected to living a healthy life that God intended for us. And you can't have one without the other. Everything is connected together. Everything. I’m not going to brow beat you with Bible verses about health because that's just not me, but the Bible does have plenty to say about the topic should you need proof that this is a viable concern.

Something has to change. The faith community has to wake up to the sleeping giant in their community before that giant wakes up and devours its prey. We can no longer ignore the problem. How can we share about the Living Water when we’re drinking poison on a regular basis? This dichotomy is screaming from the pews! You see, it’s really easy to shout from the rooftops that people need Jesus, but it’s a lot harder to face the reality that our daily purchases (Big Food) actually keeps people away from Jesus. It’s easy to say you love Jesus on Sunday morning, but a lot harder to treat our health the way God intended the other 167 hours of the week.

The health of our nation has been my work for years. During this work, I’ve noticed that the health of the church is pathetically appalling. We’re treating our bodies like garbage disposals and our souls like a landfill. We're buying and consuming products that keep people entrapped in slavery and poverty. Did God really create us to trash the every thing He created? I don’t believe so.

BHT, coloring dyes, GMOs (pesticides, Roundup, hormones and antibiotics to include rBGH & rBST), artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, preservatives - these are just a sampling of ingredients in all Big Food products.

And what do these ingredients do to your health? They are all linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, tumors, obesity, low immune system, chronic sickness, ear infections, infertility, male sterility, hyperactivity, autism, depression - the list is endless.

So if you’ve made the connection “did I make myself sick?” the answer is most likely, yes. Between 90-95 percent of all diseases (including cancer) are preventable through lifestyle. This is according to NIH. We can no longer use a Hail Mary when we’ve neglected our health all along. Grace is wonderful, but treating our bodies like an afterthought is a disrespect to God’s grace.

I cringe when I see believers post photos of their food choices and lifestyle. Especially when they post photos of what they are feeding their kids. It almost makes me ashamed to be a believer! Pretty photos of sugary products that cause disease. Candy that causes a host of health issues. Celebrating a milestone at fast food joint. It’s not a judgment, but an indicator to me that we have a ton of work to do in the faith community on this topic! And then a few days later updates indicate they are sick again. Or have another ear infection. You name it. And guess what? It's all connected to what they put in their body. You can't treat your body like crap and expect good health.

The faith community should be a place of healing but sadly it’s a place of promoting sickness. Donuts and coffee at the welcoming table. Men’s breakfast with five different types of farm factory meat, white, refined flour biscuits and gravy and pasteurized juice (no nutrients). Ladies Tea with the main attraction being sugary treats. These events are keeping people trapped in their food addiction. How is that helping them? It’s not.

FYI: Big Food is designed (important note: not created by God) to keep people addicted to their products for life. That is not living in freedom, my friends. Big Food also destroys the land God made, uses unethical labor and other humanitarian issues that should greatly concern you. Here are two great resources to find out how many slaves you use: Made In a Free World and Slavery Footprint. Very insightful to change your buying and eating habits.

No wonder people think we are hypocrites! We are! But you don’t have to be a hypocrite any more. You can change. You can start to match your words with your actions.

The truth will set you free and the truth about what you feed your soul, what you feed your body will free you and generations to come. Being healthy isn’t just for yourself, it’s for generations to come. And another little fact: did you know that what the mother eats sets the DNA for the next 5-6 generations? That’s a pretty powerful reason to start cleaning up your plate! What you are eating will determine what diseases (or good health) your future generations will inherit.

This message of health and what we put in our bodies is one that virtually no one wants to speak about. While others may be okay with, I am not. As believers, we are the light to those around us, but sadly our light is tainted with toxins and sickness and disease. Not because we are human but because we have ignored our health all along. We need to be on forefront of this battle, not sitting on the sidelines!

Another topic: Do you know what GMO is and what is happening to the very earth that God created? Did you know that if you are buying Big Food products (virtually anything in commercial supermarkets, Wal-Mart, Target, etc), consume fast “food”, or chew gum, that GMOs are in those products that God never intended to be in your body? GMOs are a real issue and so far the Christian circle is pretty silent on it. We need to be on forefront of justice issues, not waiting for someone else to take the initiative. And yes, health justice is very much a topic that impacts the faith community.

Our faith values need to coincide with our food choices. Our faith values need to match our ethics when it comes to what we put in our mouth or slater on our skin.

The faith community can’t live without their coffee, but did you know that it takes 37 gallons of clean water to make one cup of coffee? To dig deeper, coffee and cocoa are two crops that use slave/human trafficking/child labor the most. Yes, health justice is very much related to your faith.

What can you do? Here are 9 ways to start matching your faith with your daily choices and walking the talk.

1) Disrupt your buying and eating habits

I’m not going to sugarcoat it and suggest baby steps. We’re too far gone for that. Clean out your fridge, your cupboards, pantry and get rid of the toxic products. Yes, even that baking powder (if it’s not Rumford brand it contains Aluminum).

2) If you are a church leader, start talking about this issue

Work at a church or other faith community? Start the conversation. Share this series with them. We can not ignore the issue anymore. If you don't feel comfortable talking about it, I'm happy to talk with them!

3) Change where you shop

If you are currently shopping at Wal-Mart, Target, commercial stores for food, stop. You get your health from where you shop. Get to know your local, organic farmer. Shop at local co-ops, health food stores, farmer’s markets. Here is a great resource to get you started. On a tight budget? Read this. But remember, how much are you paying to be sick? Medicine, time off work, doctor visits- these virtually do not happen with the people that buy and eat real food and take care of their body. Something to think about.

4) Hire me to speak and/or host a workshop

I’d love nothing more than to help your church leadership, community and get well. We’ve designed the workshops to be a practical source of knowledge that you can apply instantly.

5) Work with me personally

You can sign up for our 21 day program and learn how to eat, cook, shop, live, prevent disease and reprogram your mind, body, life. So worth it!

6) Educate yourself

Before you put another thing in your mouth or swallow another pill, read the ingredient label and know the associated (and serious) health risks. Calories aren’t the focus of this exercise. It’s what makes up the product that is either giving you disease or giving you health.

7) Eat real, God-made food, drink, cures

It’s pretty simple what to eat: if God made it, you can eat, drink, consume it. If God did not make it, do not eat, drink, swallow, chew, consume. And PSA: soft drinks, Slurpees/Icee, energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster, etc) are not real drink. Ditch them right now.

8) Buy organic

There are so many reasons to eat organic! One of the reasons is that pesticides are toxins and fat cells like toxins. So if you want to lose weight, eat organic. Another huge reason is that organic farming also cares for the land that God created. Conventional farming does not. Again, put your faith into practice by buying that which God intended for you.

9) Devour this site

This website, Twitter, Instagram, eNewsletter and other social platforms are filled with countless resources to help you live incredibly well, prevent disease and share the love of Jesus to everyone around us. Here are some other vetted sources:

10 Reasons to Make Bee Pollen A Part of Your Daily Nutrition

5424404555_1a407dab0c_b.jpg

Do you know about bee pollen? Do you know what it is? Bee pollen is made by honeybees from flowers. One note: SAVE THE HONEYBEES! Because if we don't have honeybees, we don't have food. Bee pollen is one of the rare foods needed for human survival as it contains almost all the nutrients needed to sustain human life. (Organic raw honey is the other one.) The nutritional profile of bee pollen includes 18 amino acids, 12 vitamins (B, C, D, E), 28 minerals, 11 enzymes, 14 essential fatty acids, beta-carotene, calcium, magnesium, selenium, boosts immune system, counteracts the effects of radiation and chemical toxins, is an anti-oxidant (chases away free radicals). The CDC and EPA estimates that people are exposed to over 200 different forms or radioactive toxins and over 60,000 different chemical toxins yearly.

Bee pollen
Bee pollen

10 reasons to make bee pollen a part of your daily nutrition

1) A superfood. Bee pollen is a nutritional powerhouse. As for the above stated reasons.

2) Detoxes the body. Because our bodies are exposed to so many toxins every day through our air, food, water, and soil, it's imperative that we eat foods that help to get rid of toxins naturally.

3) A complete protein. Because of the nutritional content, bee pollen is a complete protein meaning it contains all the amino acids. It contains more protein than meat, eggs, or cheese of equal volume!

4) Can not be made in a lab. This may be the best part! It can not be made in a lab so Big Food can not try to reproduce this amazing product. Of course, always make sure to buy organic!

5) Allergy prevention. If you suffer from hay fever or seasonal allergies, you'll want to start incorporating bee pollen into your daily diet. More effective than drugs with harmful side effects, bee pollen is very effective in treating allergies. You'll want to start taking bee pollen 6 weeks before the start of allergy season and keep taking it.

6) Real food for athletes. Bee pollen increases strength and endurance without chemicals or steroids. The Finnish track team in 1972 used bee pollen because of it's natural performance enhancing properties and ended up sweeping the podium. Real food for the win once again! (No pun intended.)

7) Beauty and anti-aging. Looking for smooth, soft skin? Good skin starts with a healthy inside and bee pollen helps to keeps skin cells fresh and less susceptible to winkles. #NoBotox

8) Weight control. Fat cells store toxins and because bee pollen helps to rid the body of toxins, bee pollen is a natural weight loss method.

9) Boosts immune system. Because of its natural antibiotic property, it helps strengthen immune system and heal the gut (where 80% of your immune system lies).

10) Helps with infertility. If you are a woman struggling to conceive or know a woman who, listen up! Bee pollen stimulates ovarian function!

11) And a bonus: bee pollen is very beneficial for those who have had cancer radiation because of the detoxing properties.

How to use:

If you have never eaten bee pollen before, start taking it slowly with one or two granules under the tongue. If your body handles it fine, increase the amount a little each day. The amount will vary from person to person. After your body is used to it, take it daily. By the teaspoon (my favorite), on top of organic smoothies, or before/after a workout.

Read this for how to buy bee pollen. She said it better than I could!

Will you start incorporating bee pollen into your daily diet?

Lotions and Potions: What's Really In Your Skin Care?

9377732650_2f4d8cc295_b.jpg

“If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.”

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body? Your skin absorbs at least 60% of what you slather on it and gets absorbed right into your bloodstream. Commercial store shelves are filled with toxic products including beauty products. Even many “healthy” people don’t realize what they are putting on their skin. Up to 95% of diseases are preventable (NIH) and they are preventable through lifestyle. What you put in your mouth (cigarettes, gum/mints, alcohol, Rx & OTC drugs, artificial ingredients) and what you put on your skin is directly related to either sickness or health. Sadly, many people don't bother to read the ingredients on non-edible products and don’t realize they are putting carcinogens right on their skin.

Wellness and healthy living is not exclusive to just one thing. Wellness is many holistic things: drinking pure, filtered water (not from a plastic bottle), fitness, eating organic food, supporting local organic farmers, massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture and using non-toxic skin care products. Here are the top 12 ingredients to look out for when buying beauty products i.e. shampoo, conditioner, face cleanser, lotion, cosmetics, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip balms/chapstick, baby products, body butter, perfumes, deodorants to name a few.

Benzoyl Peroxide Commonly found in acne products, MSDS reports that it is a possible tumor promoter. It can also act as a mutagen, produces DNA in human cells. It’s also toxic by inhalation. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant.

FD&C Color and Pigments This ingredient is used in almost all Big Food food-like products, gum, Altoids and also commercial skin care products. These artificial colors derived from coal tar contain heavy metal salts that absorb directly into the skin, causing skin sensitivity/irritation. Absorbing this can cause depletion of oxygen and even death. Almost all animal studies show that they are carcinogenic.

DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine) A foam booster, it is a skin/eye irritant and causes contact dermatitis. It is quickly absorbed through the skin and collects in body organs and the brain.

Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl) Used as preservatives and they aren’t always labeled. An ingredient in commercial deodorants and other skin care products. Found in breast cancer tumors. Attributed to sterility in males, hormone imbalance in females and early puberty.

Propylene Glycol (PG), Butylene Glycol Petroleum plastics. The EPA considers PG very toxic it requires gloves, clothing, goggles and disposal by burying.
